Foreign inmates mistreated in Morocco? The response from the prison administration
The DGAPR rejects the allegations of mistreatment against ten Spanish inmates incarcerated in Tetouan and Tangier. The administration denies any inhumane treatment, stating that the detention conditions respect the standards and are subject to regular medical and consular monitoring.
The accusations of "inhumane" conditions relayed by the Spanish press concern ten nationals convicted of drug trafficking. The delegation emphasizes that the requests for transfer to Spain, made by seven prisoners in Tetouan, fall under specific legal procedures and particular steps that are beyond its direct competence.
Regarding an inmate suffering from digestive problems, the administration assures that he benefits from an adapted diet and has received twelve medical consultations as well as two hospital transfers. The alleged suicide attempt by another prisoner has been reclassified as a minor hand injury, inflicted by the person concerned with a toothbrush for strictly personal reasons.
At Tanger 2 prison, the allegations of malnutrition and overcrowding have been firmly denied. The cells, regularly treated - the last operation dating from March 5, 2026 - are equipped with sufficient beds and blankets. The inmates receive daily meals in accordance with the specifications and participate in sports activities.
The organization of visits is now done through an electronic application, with facilities granted to families coming from abroad. Finally, the DGAPR specifies that the Spanish consular representatives make regular visits to their nationals without ever having made observations corroborating the complaints published in the media.
