Several dozen French people incarcerated in Moroccan prisons
Moroccan prisons have a total of 95,685 inmates, including 1,598 foreigners, including French, serving sentences for drug trafficking offenses among others. This is indicated in a recent report by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration.
The prison population in Morocco stands at 95,685 inmates as of September 30, 2025, including 1,598 foreigners (102 women and 1,496 men). The vast majority of foreign prisoners, or 1,228 people, come from African countries, which represents about 77% of the total. Senegalese are in the lead with 306 inmates, followed by Algerians (94), Tunisians (24), Egyptians and Mauritanians (12 each) and Libyans (7).
As for European detainees in Moroccan prisons, their number reaches 287, or 18% of the total foreign inmates. In detail, there are 102 prisoners of French origin, 74 Spaniards and 31 Dutch. The Asian prisoners number 41, including Syrians, Iraqis, Saudis, Yemenis, Palestinians, Chinese and Israelis.
Moroccan prisons also house 24 inmates of American origin, including 11 Brazilians. The report also notes the presence of 18 inmates with dual nationality, without giving any details.
