Football: the "war" of dual nationals intensifies between Spain and Morocco

Luis de la Fuente will unveil his list for the next commitments of the Spanish national team, and the name of Brahim Díaz will probably be absent. The young Real Madrid striker has indeed decided to turn his back on La Roja to wear the colors of Morocco, his country of origin. A personal choice that is only the tip of the iceberg, revealing an open "war" between the two countries to attract dual national players.
Born in Malaga and trained in the youth categories of Spain, Brahim Díaz seemed destined for a bright future with La Roja. A first selection in 2021 under Luis Enrique fueled all hopes. But tired of sitting on the bench and not gaining the confidence of the coach, the Madrid player decided to take his destiny into his own hands. Morocco, the country whose nationality he holds thanks to his father, offered him a golden opportunity to fully express himself and live his passion for football at the highest level and undoubtedly a key role.
Far from being an isolated case, Brahim Díaz’s choice is part of a broader trend. Morocco has indeed put in place an ambitious strategy to attract its dual national talents and compete with the great football nations of Europe. A brand new football academy in Salé, a high-performance scouting network abroad and a discourse focused on roots and culture make the difference. The goal is clear: to build a strong and competitive national team capable of shining on the international stage.
On the other side of the Strait of Gibraltar, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) seems to be lagging behind in the management of its dual national talents. The example of Lamine Yamal, pampered by the RFEF and convinced to represent Spain, contrasts with the apparent disinterest towards Brahim Díaz. A lack of consideration that has probably weighed in the balance when making his choice.
Brahim Díaz’s choice is a strong symbol for Morocco, which is strengthening itself in view of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 World Cup it will host. Spain, for its part, sees an increasingly formidable rival in the "war" for dual national talents. Many players born or raised in Spain have decided to play for Morocco.
