FIFA Triples Women's World Cup Prize Money to $152 Million, Players to Receive Direct Payments

FIFA has announced a significant increase in the overall allocation for the Women’s Football World Cup, which will take place from July 20 to August 20. The total amount distributed will be $152 million (€141.8 million), three times more than for the 2019 edition in France, and ten times more than for the 2015 edition in Canada.

The international football body has also announced a change in the distribution of prizes. A portion of these funds will now be allocated directly to the players, rather than allowing the federations to freely dispose of all the funds. Each of the 32 qualified teams will receive a minimum of $1.56 million (€1.46 million).

A progressive reward system has been put in place based on the performance of each team. Players eliminated in the group stage will receive $30,000, and this amount will increase according to the level reached in the tournament, peaking at $270,000 for the world champions. As a reminder, the average annual salary of professional players in 2022 was $14,000 (€13,000), very far from their male counterparts.

In addition to the $110 million fund for the performance of the participating countries, FIFA plans to distribute $30.7 million for the preparation of the tournament and $11.5 million to the clubs that make their international players available. The FIFPro union welcomed these changes, stressing that they constitute a step towards greater gender equality in sport.

Here is a summary of the prize amounts:

• Group stage: Players eliminated at this stage will receive $30,000.
• Round of 16: Players who reach this stage of the tournament will receive $60,000.
• Quarter-finals: Players who reach the quarter-finals will receive $90,000.
• Third-place match: Players who lose the third-place match will receive $165,000.
• Third place: Players who finish third will receive $180,000.
• Final: Finalists will receive $195,000.
• World champions: The future world champions will receive the largest prize, amounting to $270,000.
