Fez Water Authority CEO Arrested in Corruption Sting, Trial Set for October 27

Hanafi Aboukir, director of the Autonomous Water and Electricity Distribution Authority of Fez (RADEEF) is now in pre-trial detention. The elements of the National Brigade of the Judicial Police had arrested him on October 8 in flagrante delicto of corruption at the Majorelle café located a few dozen meters from the police station of the city.

The object of the corruption is an envelope of 20,000 DH, a signed statement. An envelope that the CEO of Radeef was receiving from the hands of a contractor, a former retired agent of the Authority, who had carried out drinking water network projects. His arrest follows a denunciation by the contractor through the direct number of the public prosecutor’s office. During a search carried out at his home and in his vehicle, the investigators seized an amount of 500,000 DH.

The interrogation of the accused before the investigating judge took place last Monday. "During the preliminary interrogation, the contractor would have been accused of having already bribed the CEO of the authority previously" before denouncing him, confides to L’Économiste a source close to this case. "The contractor stated before the investigating judge that he was a victim of extortion and that all the work carried out by his company was up to standard," she adds, reporting that "the investigating judge set the date of October 27 for the next step, that is to say the in-depth interrogation".

"Aboukir is currently in the local prison of Ras El Mae, where he is being held in pre-trial detention," it is specified. His file was transmitted to the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal, competent in criminal matters, because the sums seized are greater than 100,000 DH (520,000 DH).
