Fez Undergoes Major Transformation for 2030 World Cup and CAN 2025

In the perspective of the co-organization of the 2030 World Cup by Morocco alongside Spain and Portugal, Fez is working on its renewal. This is evidenced by the unveiling by FIFA of the organization map of the city for the sporting event.
Fez will undergo a reforming revolution before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) and the 2030 World Cup. This is at least what the organization map of the city of Fez for the 2030 World Cup, published by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), shows. A transformation that involves the implementation of a set of major projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and developing services in the city. These projects include initiatives in the fields of transport, infrastructure and sustainable development.
The stadium will have a capacity of 52,000 spectators and will comply with the standards of the International Federation of Association Football. The implementation of an expansion plan for Fez-Saïss airport is also planned, including the creation of new aircraft parking areas on an area of 15 hectares, as well as the financing of the new road connecting the airport to the southern highway over a distance of 6.5 kilometers. With the expansion of aircraft parking areas, the airport will see its transit capacity increase from 3 to 5 million passengers per year by 2028. The schedule for the renewal of equipment on the Rabat-Fez line will be completed before 2028.
As for urban transport, 260 new urban buses will be acquired, as part of a study on the restructuring of urban transport that includes the implementation of final scenarios for public transport modes and network types. Fez is also betting on a high-speed internet connection. The city will benefit from the fifth generation of communications and the Internet. Thus, the city’s public places will benefit from free WiFi coverage, including tourist areas, gardens and public spaces. The city, in coordination with the local authorities and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), will determine the appropriate locations for coverage. Fez has the necessary infrastructure to deploy the 5G network. This will be launched after obtaining the licenses from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT).
As for sustainable development, projects such as the reuse of treated water and the launch of a program for the reuse of treated water for the irrigation of green spaces will be implemented as part of the development plan for the 2022-2027 period in the spiritual and scientific capital of the kingdom. It is also planned to launch a program to modernize public lighting towards LED technology starting in December 2024, as well as the construction of a biogas plant with a capacity of 1.2 megawatts, covering 40% of the city’s public lighting needs and a first private solar power plant with a capacity of 33 megawatts in Aïn Bida, scheduled for completion in December 2026.
