Fès building collapse investigation Morocco deaths
The collapse of a residential building in Fès claimed numerous victims. As search operations in the rubble come to an end, the prosecutor’s office announces the opening of proceedings to establish responsibility for this tragedy.
The initial death toll of four quickly worsened as clearing operations progressed. Mobilized at dawn, civil protection teams searched relentlessly through the remains of this eleven-apartment building, eight of which were occupied. The victims were distributed between the Ghassani regional hospital, which received fifteen deceased or injured persons, and Hassan II University Hospital Center, where five seriously injured patients were admitted. Rescue operations definitively stopped after confirming that no other residents were trapped under the debris.

To eliminate any additional risk, local authorities immediately evacuated adjacent buildings that were potentially weakened. Meanwhile, the Prosecutor General of the King at the Fès Court of Appeal responded on Thursday by ordering the opening of a judicial investigation. This investigation, announced as "thorough and meticulous," aims to determine the exact causes of the accident and clearly establish the responsibilities of the various parties involved in this catastrophe that shocked the neighborhood.
