Fatima El Hassani Elected First Female President of Morocco’s Northern Region

Fatima El Hassani, former MAP journalist, is now the newly elected President of the Tanger-Al Hoceima-Tétouan region. She succeeds Ilyas El Omari, who was forced to resign.
The former media professional, serving at MAP, Fatima El Hassani, benefited from the trust of her peers as soon as the PJD candidate, Saïd Khaïroune, Mayor of Ksar El Kébir, withdrew from the race.
To this effect, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) maintains control over this region, following the will of the different parties represented not to propose a candidate. This party thus consolidates its position as the leader within the region, with 18 seats out of 63.
It should be noted that the PJD had renounced to present a candidate for fear of "assuming the legacy" of Ilyas El Omari’s management, before retracting and deciding to put forward the candidacy of Saïd Khaïroune.
