Father Sentenced for Embezzling $220,000 from Disabled Daughter’s Medical Fund

The Courtrai court, in the Flemish region, has sentenced a Moroccan father to five months in prison with probation for the misappropriation of 201,000 euros. This amount was paid by the insurance for the account of his severely disabled daughter due to a medical error at birth.
As compensation and damages for this medical error, the young girl and her parents had received 220,000 euros from the insurers. The money was supposed to be used to pay for the girl’s medical expenses and care. The two parents were the account managers, but according to the mother, she was never informed by her ex-husband, reports 7sur7.
Unfortunately, the daughter died in 2015, and the couple did not survive the tragedy. After the divorce, the man had withdrawn a little more than 200,000 euros from the account for his own needs and the purchase of an apartment in Morocco, said the lawyer for the second daughter and the ex-wife. "Only 19,000 euros had been used for the care of his disabled daughter, the rest of the amount was withdrawn in cash." The deception was discovered when the couple went to the notary to take inventory of the assets.
In addition to the five-month suspended prison sentence, the defendant must pay a fine of 800 euros, also suspended. To the deceased victim’s sister and mother, he had to reimburse 82,000 euros and 122,000 euros respectively, the same source specifies.
