Europe Exports Surplus Coal to Morocco Amid Shifting Energy Demands

Faced with an energy crisis last year, Europe had resumed coal mining. Today, with the decrease in demand for fossil fuels, the old continent is opting for the export of large quantities of coal, particularly to destinations like Morocco.

Due to an emergency situation in 2022, coal was quickly imported from several countries, including Colombia, South Africa and Indonesia, to fuel the hastily reactivated power plants. But the excess of coal was caused by a variety of factors, including moderate temperatures, energy-saving strategies and the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The unused coal stockpile has become a financial burden for Europe, due to the storage costs it generates. For this reason, Europe has chosen to export this coal, according to the media Nederlands Dagblad.

Thus, more than 1.1 million tons of coal would have already been shipped this year, as revealed by the Bloomberg agency. The destinations of these shipments include countries such as Morocco, Senegal, Guatemala or India.
