Elderly Pedestrian Killed in Casablanca Tram Accident, Adding to Safety Concerns

Another tramway accident in Casablanca. It adds to an already poor record. Indeed, according to RATP Dev Casablanca, more than 141 people were killed in a tramway accident in 2018. This time, it was an elderly pedestrian who was hit Monday while trying to cross the track.
It was a T1 tram running between the Hay Raja and Ibn Tachfine stations on line 1 that hit a septuagenarian pedestrian on Monday, October 21, 2019 at 7:50 a.m., according to a press release from RATP Dev.
Despite the immediate activation of emergency braking, the tram driver was unable to avoid the collision with the elderly person who was trying to cross the platform outside the designated lanes.
Despite the immediate intervention of the Civil Protection, the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries, according to the details provided by RATP Dev, which at the same time presents its "most sincere condolences" to the family of the deceased.
The company took advantage of this latest tragedy to remind users of the importance of respecting the rules of the Highway Code and road signs, as well as the need to exercise great caution around tram platforms, in order to avoid tragedies.
