Eid al-Adha Belgium Police Seize Sheep Home Slaughter

On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the police and the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPA) of Liège jointly inspected potential home slaughter sites. Five animals were seized from individuals in violation of regulations.

Although European justice has recognized ritual sacrifice as a right linked to freedom of worship since 2018, Belgian legislation imposes strict rules. The municipality of Liège thus requires a formal exemption to practice this killing at home, accompanied by an obligation for prior stunning.

Without this authorization, citizens must imperatively go to an approved facility. In order to track these violations, law enforcement deployed on Wednesday, May 27 to carry out field verifications, supported by the RSPA whose role was to take charge of the confiscated animals.

This mobilization led to the discovery of owners lacking any authorization. Four animals were recovered in the Liège agglomeration, to which is added one specimen found tied in full sun in a garden in Chaudfontaine. Inspector Danaé Schifflers regrets that the personnel were unable to rescue more animals.

The association’s management, firmly opposed to these practices, emphasizes that "a sheep is a sentient being, endowed with emotions and needs". The rescued males were sterilized by a veterinarian to accelerate their adoption. They are now preparing to join a flock in a meadow, where they will benefit from water, food and a secure environment.
