French Government Issues Guidelines for Eid al-Adha Animal Sacrifice

A few days before the celebration of Eid el-Kebir or Eid al-Adha, the French authorities have developed and disseminated a practical guide to organize and supervise the slaughter of sacrificial animals so that this festival takes place under good conditions.
A moment of sharing and conviviality between families, Eid el-Kebir takes place in France over a period of one to three days, during which more than 100,000 sheep are slaughtered for the sacrifice. To support the organization of this celebration, particularly with regard to the logistics for the slaughter of animals in certain departments and local authorities, the Ministries of Agriculture and the Interior have produced a practical guide, indicates the Ministry of Agriculture on its website.
The document contains a set of rules to be respected for the slaughter of animals in accordance with the standards during the three days of Eid el-Kebir. It was distributed to the prefectures and departmental directorates for the protection of populations, and to all stakeholders (professionals, Muslim associations, animal welfare associations, etc.) with the aim of sharing good organizational practices.
In collaboration with the Œuvre d’assistance aux bêtes d’abattoirs (OABA) and with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, the École nationale des services vétérinaires (ENSV) has also produced small awareness-raising posters for individuals, operators of supply sites and temporary slaughterhouses.
