Morocco Ramps Up Sheep Production Ahead of Eid al-Adha

In order to optimize marketing and ensure better performance, livestock breeders have started the fattening operation of sheep destined for sale on the occasion of Eid al-Adha, after obtaining authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture.

With this fattening operation, breeders will be able to have good quality and well-fattened sheep, meeting the criteria of the ritual sacrifice, reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia. It consists of feeding the animals finished products for three to four months and is part of the measures taken by the government to ensure the smooth running of Eid Al-Adha.

Other measures such as increasing livestock imports, strengthening local production, and enhanced coordination between the various stakeholders are also planned. The Executive is making efforts to diversify the import markets for livestock (sheep, cows and goats) and ensure the availability of sheep for the sacrifice at affordable prices.

Thus, the government has authorized the import of Australian sheep, known to be healthy and of exceptional quality. For its part, the National Office of Sanitary Safety of Food Products (ONSSA) is preparing to launch an operation to identify sheep and goats in order to ensure traceability of the animals. To this end, a yellow ring with a unique serial number and the mention "Eid al-Adha" will be affixed to the animals’ ears.
