Economic Crisis Drives Surge in Moroccan Visa Applications to Spain

Faced with the worsening financial crisis, hundreds of Moroccans are preparing to leave Morocco. Many are heading to the Spanish Consulate in Nador to obtain a visa.
"Poverty is wreaking more and more havoc in the ranks of the population," writes the local newspaper El Faro de Melilla. Many families are having trouble ensuring their daily bread. In the long queues, the security forces are redoubling their efforts to enforce the distancing measure on the many candidates for departure.
Thanks to an agreement between the Ministry of Family and the Provincial Council of Nador, many goods carriers have benefited from financial support of nearly 800,000 euros from the authorities.
This financial support, however, did not prevent demonstrations in Nador to demand the reopening of the borders. Some could not be held, such as the one on September 12.
