Dutch football mourns Ahmed Ammi, born in Morocco and dead at 45

His death was announced on September 15 by Fortuna Sittard, where he managed the under-19 team. The club paid tribute to a committed coach, an inspiring mentor and a warm-hearted man who left a deep mark on the players and his colleagues.

Born on January 19, 1981, in Temsamane, in the Rif, Ahmed Ammi moved to the Netherlands during his childhood and grew up in Blerick, near Venlo. After making his debut with SV Blerick, he began his professional career at VVV-Venlo in 2001.

The right-back became a regular starter for the Limburg club, with which he secured promotion to the top division in 2007. He then joined NAC Breda, where supporters particularly remember his goal in a 3-1 victory over Ajax Amsterdam.

In 2008, Ahmed Ammi signed for ADO The Hague. He played 107 matches there and reached one of the highlights of his career by securing European qualification in 2011. In total, the defender played more than 300 matches in Dutch professional football, reports AD.

From VVV-Venlo to Fortuna Sittard’s youth teams

Ahmed Ammi returned to VVV-Venlo in 2013 before ending his career at KFC Uerdingen, in Germany, and then with amateur club EVV Echt. He subsequently turned to coaching and joined Fortuna Sittard’s academy.

In recent months, the former player had spoken publicly about his fight against cancer and taken part in a campaign encouraging men to undergo screening for the disease. He continued working with young players despite the treatments.

VVV-Venlo, NAC Breda and ADO The Hague also paid tribute to the memory of their former defender. Fortuna Sittard extended its condolences to his wife, his children and all his loved ones.
