Drought-Driven Milk Shortage Sparks Panic Buying in Morocco

To counter the rush of Moroccans for milk, several supermarkets have decided to limit its sale. A measure intended to avoid stock shortages.
Many Moroccans have stormed the stores to stock up on large quantities of milk. This situation has prompted some large retailers to limit milk sales and monitor purchases. The kingdom is indeed facing a milk shortage, due to the severe drought the country is experiencing.
The Marjane group explains this, stating that this decision only concerns certain stores and aims to ensure better stock management. In addition to the reported drop in production, this lack of milk on store shelves is also explained by massive purchases by consumers.
According to the group, some consumers are buying these large quantities to resell them at retail "in a speculative approach". This situation risks having consequences on the availability of the product in the large stores and could lead to situations of shortages, the group warned.
"Our role is to prevent, in the current situation, these speculative bulk purchases and to ensure the flow of products to the final consumer," it stressed. And to add that "these are the standing instructions we have given to all our stores forever. We are retail traders, not wholesalers." However, the group reassures, no stock shortages are to be feared and it will ensure sufficient quantities for its customers.
