Drought and Rising Costs Fuel Milk Shortage in Morocco

Announced for several months by professionals in the sector, the milk shortage has been confirmed by the government during the weekly press briefing. According to the government spokesman, the situation is due to several factors.
Water crisis, milk shortage, Moroccans are not at the end of their troubles. According to Mustapha Baitas, the drought that Morocco is going through and which has worsened this year is one of the factors explaining the milk shortage. To this must be added the very high cost of fodder.
Faced with the difficulties of properly feeding their cows, some farmers have simply closed their doors, making their livestock available to slaughterhouses to make a profit while they still can. No longer having enough raw material in sufficient quantity, the industrial companies in the dairy sector found themselves in difficulty, unable to meet the needs of Moroccan consumers.
During the press conference following the Council of Government, he stressed that the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests is considering strategies to be adopted and the implementation of a support program in order to control production.
