Drama in Belgium: Mohamed, family man, dies in arson attack
A fire ravaged an apartment building in Schaerbeek during the night of April 20-21, killing a father of three. Investigators are pursuing the criminal angle and have placed his neighbor under arrest warrant.
Around 3 a.m., firefighters intervened on Avenue Émile Zola to evacuate residents from a burning building. The fire claimed the life of Mohamed S., a 51-year-old metro driver. Another person was hospitalized for intoxication, though their life is not in danger. A union delegate at STIB and father of three children, the fifty-year-old was a respected figure in the neighborhood. His loved ones describe on social media a man "profoundly human," always ready to discuss the flaws of a "society that has become too individualistic."

The accidental cause was quickly ruled out by authorities. A 63-year-old woman, the victim’s neighbor, was arrested and then incarcerated. She is officially charged with willful arson committed at night resulting in death, violation of weapons legislation, and threats by gesture. From the initial findings, the prosecutor appointed a specialized expert and mandated the federal judicial police laboratory. An investigating judge took charge of the inquiry.

This tragedy occurs in a context of particularly harmful neighborhood relations. According to information reported by Bruxelles Today, the victim had already filed multiple complaints against the suspect. The morning before the tragedy, Mohamed S. had even gone to the police station to report threats of arson made by the latter. The SudInfo media also echoes previous violent disputes, recalling that a few weeks ago, the sixty-year-old woman allegedly threw a television out the window, damaging a parked vehicle on the street.
