Dozens of Moroccan Gendarmes on Trial for Alleged Drug Trafficking Complicity

The court of first instance in Casablanca began on Tuesday the examination of the drug trafficking case involving 37 gendarmes from Béni Mellal and other neighboring regions.
The chamber in charge of financial crimes of the court heard some of the accused on Tuesday. The hearing will continue on Tuesday, February 11. The court rejected the defense’s request for an expert analysis of the telephone calls, recalling that the transcription of these conversations is part of the case file.
The gendarmes were arrested after their complicity with a drug trafficker active in Béni Mellal was established. They are accused of having turned a blind eye to the illegal activities of the criminal, who is the subject of dozens of national arrest warrants. He was finally apprehended on the firm instructions of the Attorney General of the King.
Heard by the investigating judge, the drug trafficker admitted to having directly paid bribes to certain accused gendarmes, whom he was able to easily identify during the investigation. However, he said he did not recognize other accused because he sometimes used intermediaries to give them money.
