Moroccan Residents in Spain Stranded by Airline Policy Clash, Risking Academic and Career Futures

Hundreds of Moroccan students and workers residing in Spain are currently unable to return to Spanish territory from Morocco, even though their administrative situation is in order.
The issue is a conflict of interpretation of entry rules: airlines require a "return authorization" that Spanish law does not require for land and sea border crossings.
The Spanish legislation allows a foreigner whose residence permit has expired to return to the country if they present a receipt proving that a renewal application is in progress. However, airlines operating from Moroccan airports apply a stricter policy. They refuse boarding without this specific "return authorization", a document that is only issued in Spain and for a period of 90 days, which most travelers did not apply for before their departure.
This situation has direct consequences for many Moroccans, as the academic and professional start of the year approaches. "I came for a two-week vacation. I was denied boarding because of a document I had never heard of," testifies a student in Barcelona, cited by Le Matin, who now fears losing his semester. An employee in Valencia fears "professional repercussions", estimating that her "future is in suspense".
Faced with this administrative imbroglio, the associations of Moroccans in Spain are calling on the Moroccan and Spanish governments for "urgent coordination". They suggest two avenues: either allow the Spanish consulates in Morocco to issue this document, or align the airlines’ requirements with the law by accepting the simple renewal receipt as sufficient proof.
