Divorced Woman Sentenced to 4 Years for Infanticide in Morocco

The criminal chamber of the Court of Appeal of Rabat sentenced a divorced woman to 4 years in prison, for voluntary homicide, prostitution and contempt of court. The thirtysomething had killed her baby, unable to win back her ex-husband.
Although separated from her husband, the thirtysomething continued to have intimate relations with her ex-spouse. She wanted to have a child to force him to come back to her, she told the judge.
Exasperated by her ex-husband’s reaction, the young woman decided to get rid of the child. She first suffocated him, then wrapped the body in a plastic bag before hiding it inside the freezer. At the police station, her sister declared a natural death.
The accused was caught thanks to the results of the autopsy. She finally retracted and confessed her murder to the investigators. The young woman was placed in pre-trial detention in the El Arjat prison in Salé, before appearing on Thursday before the investigating judge, who granted her extenuating circumstances.
