Defense: Morocco eyes South Korean FA-50 fighters to modernize its air fleet

A high-ranking Moroccan delegation, led by the Delegate Minister in charge of the National Defense Administration, took advantage of the World Defense Show 2026 to evaluate the integration of these aircraft within the Royal Air Force. Often referred to as a "miniature F-16", the FA-50 Golden Eagle is seen by Rabat as a strategic option to replace the aging Alpha Jet, providing both advanced pilot training and light tactical combat missions.

The technical compatibility of these jets with Morocco’s existing fleet of F-16s is a major asset for the general staff. Equipped with General Electric engines and, for the latest versions, AESA radars and AIM-120 missiles, these aircraft offer crucial interoperability. Already proven by nations such as Poland or Indonesia, the FA-50 would allow to combine instruction and operational versatility, bridging the gap between training and deployment on air superiority fighters.

These negotiations are part of a broader desire to diversify the Kingdom’s military partnerships, seeking to expand its pool of suppliers beyond its traditional American and European allies. In addition to the air force, advanced discussions are said to cover the acquisition of K2 Black Panther main battle tanks and Cheongung anti-missile defense systems, indicating a strong interest in South Korean technology. According to some industry sources, this rapprochement could involve a significant volume of land-based equipment.
