Morocco Eyes Advanced South Korean Military Technology for Defense Upgrade

Morocco continues to modernize its army. In an effort to diversify its sources of armament, the kingdom has shown keen interest in recent months for advanced defense systems manufactured in South Korea.

Morocco is interested in South Korea’s KSS-III submarines and new generation tanks. During his recent official visit to Seoul, Ryad Mezzour, Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade, met with officials and representatives of major Korean defense companies such as Hyundai Rotem, Hanwha Aerospace, and Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI).

During his three-day visit, the Moroccan minister officially expressed the kingdom’s interest in three cutting-edge systems: the KS-III submarine, the K2 Black Panther tank, and the Cheongung-II medium-range air defense system, according to La Razon. Equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) and vertical launch system (VLS) capability, the KSS-III submarine will enhance Morocco’s naval power in a region where maritime competition is increasingly fierce with Spain and Algeria, which possess submarines.

The K2 Black Panther, considered one of the most advanced tanks in the world, will significantly strengthen the capabilities of the Royal Armed Forces (FAR). As for the Cheongung-II system, equipped with AESA radars, it will enhance air defense against various threats, including ballistic missiles.

According to the Spanish media, this move by Morocco is part of a strategy to diversify its sources of armament and thus reduce its dependence on traditional suppliers. It is therefore fitting that Morocco has turned to South Korea. The Asian giant has established itself as a solid competitor in the international defense market, offering cutting-edge technology, competitive prices, and commercial flexibility, including in terms of technology transfer.
