Deadly Storm Batters Spanish Coast: 4 Dead, Including Moroccan Teen

A Moroccan minor is among the four individuals who died on Thursday, swept away by the sea on the northwest and northeast coasts of Spain, battered by violent winds and waves several meters high.

On the Catalan coast (northeast), a 16-year-old Moroccan minor died in the afternoon of Thursday after falling into the water on the beach of Tarragona, the Civil Guard said, adding that a 32-year-old German had the same fate after throwing himself into the water to try to help him. Deaths had already been recorded earlier that day. According to the emergency service of the Asturias region, a man and a woman died in the morning of Thursday after falling into the Atlantic Ocean, on the northern coast of Spain, reports EFE.

The man would be of British nationality. His body was recovered by the emergency service. The body of the woman, presumably Spanish, was found after she fell into the sea. Her body hit the rocks, the authorities said. Rescued by a boat that brought her back to port, the woman was unconscious. The rescuers tried to revive her for an hour. Without success.

On Thursday, the Spanish weather agency issued an orange alert on the northwest coast to warn of the danger of the sea. It predicted waves reaching 7 meters high on the Asturias coast. For its part, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued warnings for strong waves in the coastal areas of the Iberian Peninsula. According to the IPMA, northwest waves of 4 to 5 meters are expected on the west coast, and southwest waves measuring 3 to 4 meters will be recorded this Friday until Saturday.
