Crown Prince Moulay Hassan: Morocco’s Future King Comes of Age at 22
Moulay Hassan celebrates his 22nd birthday on May 8. From a young age, the eldest son of Mohammed VI and crown prince has been learning the craft of kingship.
At 22, Prince Moulay Hassan already has the makings of a king. The heir to the throne shows maturity during his public appearances. The future king of Morocco has played a more important role in recent months in the kingdom’s national and foreign policy, presiding over events or attending international events such as Jacques Chirac’s funeral.
The young prince has been prepared for the role of king. At the age of 8, he gave his first speech. The one who will be the 19th king of Morocco is currently studying governance, economics, and social sciences in Rabat, while continuing to assume his high-level institutional functions. Like all members of the royal family, Moulay Hassan is fluent in Arabic, French, English, and Spanish, an asset that will allow him to assert himself internationally and strengthen Morocco’s relations with the world.
The crown prince is already making his mark. Last year, his refusal of the hand-kissing, as a sign of deference, during an official ceremony, sparked many comments. Like his great-grandfather, Mohammed V, Moulay Hassan prefers to do without the hand-kissing. In terms of dress, the future king has opted for a classic and formal style: suit and tie or traditional Moroccan attire.
In his spare time, the Moroccan prince is a great sportsman: he plays football and basketball, and practices swimming, skiing, and horseback riding. Moulay Hassan shares with his father, Mohammed VI, a true passion for music. Gims, the Congolese rapper, is one of their favorite artists. Like his father, Moulay Hassan loves luxury watches. The Rolex Yacht-Master II, an 18-carat yellow gold watch worth 41,400 euros, has been seen on his wrist on various occasions.
