Corruption Probe Widens: Lawyers, Officials Summoned in Moroccan Judge Case

The case of the Tetouan judge accused of corruption has more secrets to reveal. New suspects, including lawyers and justice officials, have just been summoned.
The corrupt magistrate was denounced by his second wife, who provided an audio recording to the justice system, which reveals that her husband received a large sum of money to convict a political leader on appeal to a suspended prison sentence, while the latter had been sentenced to ten years in prison at first instance, reports the daily Al Akhbar.
The investigation, conducted by the Tetouan public prosecutor’s office, revealed "the involvement of an official working in a court of appeal at the Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima Region level". His hearing by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police (BNPJ) could provide new "useful elements for the progress of the investigation", it is specified.
The investigators will summon and hear all the people whose names were mentioned in the audio recording revealed by the judge’s wife, including those who may have played the role of intermediary. Also, "all the cases handled by the magistrate in question will be scrutinized by the investigators".
At the end of the investigation, all the people involved in this case of corruption and influence peddling will be referred to the competent public prosecutor’s office of the Rabat Court of Appeal, in charge of financial crimes.
