Morocco: a judge, denounced by his wife, in prison

A judge and two lawyers were placed in detention at the Tamesna prison, near Témara, on the decision of the investigating judge of the financial crimes court in Rabat. This measure follows the discovery of an alleged traffic of judgments, revealed by compromising audio recordings.
The case came to light when the wife of the magistrate in question revealed damning evidence. These audio documents attest to illegal transactions: court decisions would have been traded for sums of money within the Tétouan court.
Eleven people were presented to the Attorney General of the King near the financial crimes court in Rabat, after an investigation conducted by the National Brigade of the Judicial Police. Three of them, including the judge in question and two lawyers practicing in Tétouan, were placed in pre-trial detention. Another lawyer was placed under judicial supervision, with a ban on leaving the territory. Six other people, including a judge, are being prosecuted at liberty.
The case, known as the "Tétouan judge file", made headlines after the wife of the main accused judge revealed compromising audio recordings. These recordings implicate her husband, who would have manipulated cases in exchange for money. However, the reasons that prompted this woman to denounce her husband are unknown.
The National Brigade of the Judicial Police conducted thorough investigations, questioning lawyers, security guards and judges. The Attorney General of the King had ordered to deepen the investigation after a first hearing of the suspects last August.
