Controversy Erupts Over Riyad Mahrez’s Wedding Attire: Moroccan or Algerian?

Some Algerian media and internet users have spread erroneous information about the traditional Moroccan outfits worn by Algerian footballer Riyad Mahrez and British model Taylor Ward on the occasion of their wedding, attributing them to Algeria.
The Algerian media reported that Taylor Ward was dressed in an Algerian karakou and caftan, adding that the Al Ahli player and his wife paid a beautiful tribute to Algerian culture by wearing traditional Algerian outfits during their wedding celebrated on July 2 in Italy. However, other sources claim, with evidence, that the two lovebirds wore Moroccan outfits.
This usurpation of Moroccan cultural identity has sparked a lively controversy on social media. Selma Benomar, a Moroccan fashion designer based in the United Arab Emirates, denied this information, revealing that the Moroccan caftan worn by Riyad Mahrez’s wife and their daughters is one of her creations. To convince the skeptics, Benomar posted a video of Riyad and Taylor’s wedding on her brand’s Instagram account, highlighting the Moroccan caftan she specially designed for the wife of the Algerian international.
