French Journalist Faces Backlash Over Moroccan Caftan at CAF Awards

French journalist Anne-Laure Bonnet faced a huge wave of criticism and insults after posting photos of herself in a Moroccan caftan.
Anne-Laure Bonnet was present at the CAF Awards 2024 ceremony, which rewards the best African players of the year, and was held in Marrakech this year. During this ceremony, she shone in all her glory in a long dress. For the occasion, the one who worked from 2013 to 2020, at BeIN Sports went all out. She bet on a Moroccan caftan.
Happy to have worn her first Moroccan caftan, the French journalist shared photos of herself with her 140,000 Instagram followers. But this choice of clothing does not meet with unanimous approval. In her Instagram story on Friday, December 20, Anne-Laure shared a series of hateful messages against her. "Algeria will... Your mother the... It’s apparently the fashion to provoke Algeria these days," one can read. This comment provoked the journalist’s reaction. "You post a photo in a caftan and the crazies let loose," she reacted. And to add in a humorous tone: "Have a drink, it will relax you."
Algeria has several times tried to appropriate the Moroccan caftan. This has pushed Morocco to protect its traditional dress against Algeria. Is Bonnet aligning herself with the kingdom? "This is not a political stance. It’s just that I never tire of my first Moroccan caftan," the journalist justified in a post on X.
