Controversy Erupts as Antwerp Police Accused of Racial Profiling and Excessive Force Against Teen

The Antwerp police are accused of having beaten a 16-year-old boy during a check related to compliance with health measures. The police officer who hit the teenager claims to have wanted to protect himself, but witnesses denounce a racist act and an abuse of power.
The altercation took place in a meeting place for young students. The young man claims that last Monday, during a police check, the place was crowded despite the ban on gatherings.
On social media, videos show how several police officers pin a young man to the ground. Another police officer drags an unconscious minor towards him.
According to the police, a young person did not want to cooperate during the check. One of his friends would then have tried to intervene by attacking the police officers. It was at this moment that he was knocked out with a single punch by one of the police officers. He was taken to the hospital.
The young people who witnessed the scene claim that the police officers made racist remarks during the altercation. Police officers have since visited the victim’s parents. They want to file a complaint. The police have opened an internal investigation.
