Belgian Police Cleared in Fatal 2019 Collision with Fleeing Suspect

On August 20, 2019, Mehdi Bouda was hit by a police van and unfortunately did not survive the impact. While his relatives expected the police to be indicted for involuntary manslaughter, the public prosecutor’s office opted for a dismissal, plunging the victim’s family into dismay.
The facts occurred that day shortly before midnight. A simple anti-drug control operation at the Mont des Arts turned into a tragedy. According to the public prosecutor’s office, Mehdi Bouda, who was at that location during the operation, fled at the arrival of the police. It was while trying to escape the police who were chasing him that the young man was hit by a vehicle from the anti-assault brigade, which was rushing to the scene of a burglary, reports sudinfo.be.
The public prosecutor’s office looked into the case to determine what really happened. The data from the investigation, as well as the testimonies collected on the spot, allowed the public prosecutor’s office to conclude that even with the greatest will, the police car could not have avoided this tragic accident. "Following all the elements collected, the investigating judge did not consider it necessary to indict anyone in this case," explained the Brussels public prosecutor’s office. The responsibility now lies with the chamber of council, the same source specifies.
