Brussels Police Probe Alleged Brutality After Anti-Racism Protest Arrest

In a video posted on Twitter, a 19-year-old young man, with a bruised face, claims to have been handcuffed and beaten by police officers in a police vehicle. An internal investigation has been opened by the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone to clarify this matter.
The alleged victim, Mounaime, was participating in the anti-racism demonstration that took place on Sunday on the Poelaert square in Brussels.
Arrested in the vicinity of the Porte de Namur, where looting and destruction were recorded, the young man denied any involvement in the riots that followed the demonstration. Handcuffed and taken to a police van, he would have been beaten by five hooded officers before losing consciousness.
The young man says he was then taken to the Etterbeek barracks with other friends who were also arrested. On site, he told other officers that he had been a victim of police violence, without being taken seriously. Finally, he was taken to the hospital where the doctors diagnosed internal bleeding.
Mounaime’s family intends to file a complaint. Meanwhile, an internal investigation is being conducted by the Brussels-Capital/Ixelles police zone to clarify this matter.
