Contactless Payments Surge in Morocco as Cash Use Declines, Survey Finds

Long reluctant to innovative payment methods, and very attached to cash, Moroccans, due to the health crisis, have changed their habits. Cash is losing notoriety in favor of bank cards, m-payment and contactless.

According to the 2021 Stay Secure survey conducted by Visa and HPS on Moroccans’ payment habits, nearly one in five consumers (18%) said they would not complete a purchase in a store that did not offer contactless payment options.

This is clearly the preferred payment method for bank card holders. It represents a barrier gesture, especially for small, repetitive payments.

When asked about their online purchases, nearly a quarter (24%) of the consumers surveyed will abandon the idea of buying the product at the time if they encounter a delay or an authentication error.

In addition, the consumers surveyed said they felt secure when making purchases on merchant sites that provide customer reviews, a transparent refund experience and offer a variety of payment options. The logos of payment providers and visible security features such as the lock icon and the SSL certificate also allowed consumers to ensure that a merchant site was secure.
