Morocco Raises Contactless Payment Limit to 600 Dirhams, Visa Announces

Visa and the Moroccan Interbank Monetary Center (CMI) have just announced the increase of the card verification limit to 600 dirhams in Morocco. A change that will allow consumers to make large purchases without entering the PIN code and contactlessly.
From now on, with their mobile phone or wearable device, consumers have the possibility to make an important purchase, to carry out a contactless transaction without a PIN code. Visa and CMI are working closely with local banks and financial services industry partners to implement this new limit, which represents a 50% increase compared to the current amount of 400 MAD, and provide a more efficient, faster and more secure payment method, by simply tapping the card.
With the health crisis related to the coronavirus, contactless payments are being used more by Moroccans. Thus, the new ceiling will continue to improve this consumer shopping experience, as "Visa has always been a pioneer of innovation in order to offer consumers and merchants the best means of payment," said Sami Romdhane, Managing Director of Visa for the Maghreb region.
Moreover, "contactless payment has been very favorably received by merchants and cardholders, given the significant benefits that this payment method provides in terms of convenience and security. Increasing the limit for payment without a PIN code will allow merchants and their customers to accept and make more contactless payments. Our goal is to reach an overall rate of 40% of contactless payments by the end of the year," said Mikael Naciri, CEO of CMI.
