China and Morocco to Expand COVID-19 Vaccine Cooperation, Xi Jinping Says

The President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, said on Monday that his country was willing to promote cooperation with Morocco on the development and production of Covid-19 vaccines.

During a telephone conversation with King Mohammed VI on Monday, Mr. Xi reiterated his support for the Moroccan government and people in their fight against the new coronavirus. He recalled the actions the two countries have taken since the emergence of Covid-19 to date for the well-being of their peoples.

Morocco had offered invaluable support and solidarity to China and taken care of Chinese nationals stranded in Morocco, the Chinese president said. For its part, China has actively helped the kingdom by sending anti-epidemic supplies, he added.

Mr. Xi reaffirmed his position on the discovery of a Chinese vaccine against Covid-19. Once successfully developed and put into service, this vaccine would become a global public good and developing countries, especially African countries, would be among the first to benefit from it.

His wish, he said, is to see China and Morocco work together with other countries to defend multilateralism, support the World Health Organization (WHO). Such action, he believes, will allow the WHO to play a leading role and jointly safeguard the life and health of all the world’s peoples.
