After Ceuta, 86 % of Spaniards want an understanding with Morocco, but 82 % call for a stronger border

The survey, published on Monday, September 14, and reported by EFE, was conducted among 4,042 people between September 1 and 4, after approximately 80,000 migrants entered Ceuta on July 30 and 31.

When asked whether reaching an understanding with Morocco is important to guarantee border security, 86.3 % of respondents answered “very” or “fairly.” Only 10.1 % attach little or no importance to this cooperation.

At the same time, 82.2 % believe it is necessary to strengthen Spain’s borders. Conversely, 13.3 % consider the current measures sufficient. Spaniards are therefore simultaneously calling for greater firmness at the borders and for dialogue with Rabat to continue.

Nine out of ten Spaniards call for more European aid

The finding is even clearer regarding the European Union. Some 89.4 % of those surveyed want Brussels to provide greater assistance to the Spanish government in resolving the migration crisis, compared with just 7.2 % who consider European involvement sufficient.

Regarding the status of Ceuta and Melilla, 77.1 % say that the two cities are just as Spanish as any territory located on the peninsula. However, a minority of 14.3 % believe that they are in an “ambiguous and particular” situation that should be addressed through agreements with Morocco.

These results come as Spain must also contend with its persistent dependence on Moroccan labor, despite the tensions caused by the events in Ceuta.

The barometer finally addresses the possibility of interference intended to create tensions between Madrid and Rabat. They are considered likely by 67.7 % of respondents, while 24.5 % do not believe in them.

Among those who suspect interference, 49.1 % cite the United States, 38.1 % certain sectors of Moroccan society, and 35.4 % certain Israeli sectors.
