Alarming Shift: Morocco Emerges as Top Threat to Spain in Latest National Security Survey

55% of Spaniards consider Morocco to be one of the main threats to their country. This is the result of a survey conducted by the Elcano Royal Institute.
For more than half (55%) of those surveyed, Morocco represents a threat to Spain, an increase of six points compared to the survey conducted in 2024. Morocco is followed by Russia (33% compared to 36% in 2024), the United States (19% compared to 5%), Israel (8% compared to 3%) and China (6% compared to 3%). As for the perception of the threat, 60% of respondents believe that Spain’s security is not threatened, while 40% believe the opposite. In detail, 56% of right-wing voters perceive a threat, compared to 29% of left-wing and 38% of center voters.
According to the study, only 15% of Spaniards think that Spain should leave NATO. On the other hand, 91% of right-wing respondents opted for Spain to remain in the Atlantic Alliance. A position shared by 88% of centrists and 77% of those with left-wing ideology. When asked whether Europe should increase its defense budget, 57% of citizens answered in the affirmative, while 18% think the opposite. Regarding Spain, on the same question, 49% of respondents believe that the country should increase its defense spending. By ideology, there are 73% of right-wing voters, 25% of left-wing and 51% of centrists.
The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,000 people between May 19 and 29, 2025, a month before the NATO summit held in The Hague, during which the member states decided to devote 5% of their GDP to defense spending, with the exception of Spain, recalls Europa Press.
