Ceuta Firefighters Warn of Explosion Risk from Abandoned Moroccan Gas Bottles

The firefighters of Ceuta have issued an "urgent" call to the population and institutions for the proper evacuation of Moroccan gas bottles, abandoned in the city since the closure of the borders, in order to avoid any explosion.
Since the closure of the borders in March 2020, more than 6,000 Moroccan gas bottles have remained blocked in Ceuta, according to the city’s firefighters. The residents of Ceuta, who prefer to obtain these bottles because of their affordable price (4 euros) compared to the Spanish ones (14.5 euros), have depleted all the stocks. As the resupply is not possible in this period of health crisis, many consumers have turned to the local company, abandoning the Moroccan gas bottles.

Thousands of these bottles have been abandoned in the streets, illegal dumps and containers by the residents of Ceuta who no longer hope for a reopening of the borders. But this attitude exposes them to dangers in the event of a possible explosion of the gas bottles, warn the firefighters of Ceuta. "You don’t need to be a chemical engineer to imagine what a detonation of one of these highly flammable cylinders could cause," they stressed.
Faced with this security risk, the firefighters have called on the residents to deposit these gas bottles in approved centers. They have also invited the institutions involved in the treatment and control of these explosive elements to take all necessary precautions to avoid any explosion of these bottles whose effects are destructive.
