Celestial Spectacle: Blazing Fireball Streaks Across Morocco and Spain

A fireball was recently seen in northern Morocco. The phenomenon was observed by the SMART project stations located in Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Seville and Mazagón.

This fireball was spotted at an altitude of 82 km above the Fej Ennassar douar, in northern Morocco, moving towards the northwest and disintegrating at an altitude of 38 km above the Leqloue douar, in Morocco. Due to its particularly intense luminosity, it was also observed in several Spanish localities, notably in the provinces of Malaga, Granada, Almería and Huelva, reports La Opinion de Malaga.

According to Dr. José María Madiedo, researcher at the Andalusian Institute of Astrophysics (IAA-CSIC) and in charge of the SMART project, this phenomenon was caused by an asteroid that entered the atmosphere at a speed of 67,000 km/h. This brutal impact with the air caused the rock to heat up to the point of becoming a fireball of intense luminosity.
