Casablanca Unveils Plans for Massive 100,000-Seat Stadium to Meet Fan Demand

Casablanca plans to build a stadium with a capacity of 100,000 seats to strengthen the Mohammed V complex which only has 44,000. Nabila Rmili announced it on Thursday, after a meeting of the City Council.

The Mohammed V complex can no longer contain the flow of Casablanca supporters. This is why the mayor said that the need to build a larger stadium is urgent. But while waiting for this project to take shape, Nabila Rmili said she is awaiting the conclusions of the monitoring committee of the Mohammed V complex’s delegated management contract to find solutions to the current problems.

With the recent events that marred the sale of tickets for the Raja-Al Ahly match, the mayor said that the radical solution to all these difficulties is to build a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 spectators. "The current complex has a capacity of only 44,000 seats. It no longer meets the needs," she stressed.

The Secretary General of the City Council, Abdessadek Morshid, agrees. "The first observation that everyone has made for ten years is that Casablanca needs a new stadium. The Mohammed V sports complex no longer meets the needs. Its capacity compared to the influx of the public is limited and its infrastructure no longer meets the needs of the supporters. We are not saying that we are going to destroy it. It is a heritage of the city. It can still host matches of the national team. It must also be recognized that its presence in the middle of the city, in the heart of the dwellings, is also a burden for the neighboring populations. We have an emergency situation at each match in the Maarif district," he argues.
