Casablanca Privatizes Public Restroom Management in Major Urban Areas

The management of public toilets in Casablanca will soon be entrusted to the private sector. Casa-Baia has just launched a call for tenders for the routine maintenance and maintenance services of 33 sanitary blocks spread over several sites.
The public toilets concerned are those on the Corniche (13), the promenade of the Hassan II Mosque (8), the Arab League Park (3), Place Mohammed V (2), the Vélodrome urban park (1) as well as those in the El Fida district (6). The amounts of the services vary between 5.2 and 10.4 million DH and the opening of the tender offers is scheduled for Wednesday, October 20, reports L’Economiste.
The SDL is responsible for overseeing the work of fitting out the public toilets, the management, cleaning, disinfection, guarding and recruitment of agents, in accordance with the convention adopted by the city council at its session of May 10, 2021. As for Casa Baia, it will receive a percentage of 10% on the advertising revenues of the public toilets, which are still at the project stage.

The profitability of the project essentially depends on advertising. Access to public toilets will be free for users, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in low season and until 9 p.m. in high season (June, July, August and September). Each district will benefit from 8 units, each with 2 toilets for women and two for men and one for people with reduced mobility. In total, 128 units will be fitted out on the territory of the 16 districts of the city, for a budget of around 16 million DH.
For the record, this amount is significantly lower than the amount announced in 2018 for the acquisition of about a hundred automatic cleaning public toilets at a unit price of 600,000 DH. The municipality has also completed the rehabilitation of 14 existing toilets for a total amount of 3.5 million DH.
