Casablanca Meat Prices Surge as Butchers Strike Over Slaughterhouse Closures

Unhappy with the closure of several slaughterhouses deemed non-compliant, many butchers are on strike. Immediate consequence: the kg of meat is now sold at 90 DH by some butchers.
The closure of the slaughterhouses is due to the non-observance of the ban on slaughter in the weekly markets. The local authorities made this decision after conducting an in-depth study on the social repercussions of clandestine slaughter. However, many butchers persist in bad practices.
In accordance with the resolutions of the general meetings held on Tuesday, November 12 and Friday, December 27, 2019, at the headquarters of the General Union of Enterprises and Professions (UGEP, affiliated with Istiqlal), the butchers intend to denounce this decision which they describe as "unfair and abusive", reports Al Ahdath Al Maghribia.
For its part, the Regional Union of Butchers in the Casablanca-Settat region is asking the government and members of Parliament to grant them a moratorium to upgrade these slaughterhouses.
Pending a favorable response to their request, the price of the kg of meat is rising with some butchers.
