Casablanca Leases Streetlight Ad Spaces at Controversial Low Rates

The Casablanca City Council has plunged the city into total anarchy. It has sold off its advertising spaces at derisory prices, to the benefit of an awarded company that has benefited from the transaction without going through a tender process.
The critical financial situation of the city would have forced the authorities to look for new sources of revenue to replenish the coffers. The advertising space market was among the solutions adopted by the City Council, reports Akhbarona.
It would have rented out nearly 2,600 streetlights, in the districts of Hay Hassani, Aïn Chock and Anfa, at a flat rate of 3.1 million dirhams. As a result, the beneficiary company can rent each streetlight in the three districts for an annual rent of 1,200 dirhams.
The site adds that some city councilors denounced this transaction, which they describe as scandalous, especially since in 2008 the same operation had been valued at 5,000 dirhams per streetlight. In clearer terms, the company would have earned nearly 10 million dirhams in this market.
