Casablanca: General alert on housing at risk of collapse after the Fez tragedy

Following the tragedy in Fez that claimed 22 victims, the Casablanca-Settat region has triggered a state of maximum alert on its real estate portfolio. This tragedy marks the end of tolerance for anarchic renovations, to impose a rigorous technical audit of buildings at risk of collapse.

The wali of the region has issued strict directives to all the governors of the prefectures and provinces. The objective is to prevent any repetition of the catastrophic scenario of Fez in the economic capital, where the old urban fabric remains dense and vulnerable. A series of emergency meetings has been initiated, mobilizing the presidents of municipalities, local authorities and the National Agency for Urban Renewal in order to update the security diagnosis.

The new instructions require the establishment of comprehensive inventories of dangerous housing, based on strict technical criteria taking into account the state of the surrounding infrastructure. Beyond the census, the authorities aim to accelerate the pace of interventions on this issue described as a "ticking time bomb".

A repressive component accompanies this action plan. The wilaya orders strengthened control of construction permits and specifically targets unregulated renovations. These anarchic works, often affecting the load-bearing structures without expert advice, are identified as aggravating factors of fragility. The issuance of compliance certificates will now be subject to drastic technical verifications to guarantee the safety of the inhabitants.
