Illegal Construction Surges in Casablanca Region During Ramadan

Recent aerial images of the Casablanca-Settat region reveal a proliferation of anarchic constructions in douars belonging to municipalities located in the provinces of Mediouna, Berrechid and Nouaceur, during this Ramadan month.
These images show new illegal constructions (housing and businesses) in Casablanca. The authorities of the wilaya of the region have confronted these images with the recent data of the National Agency for Land Conservation, Cadastre and Mapping, confirming an increase in urban planning offenses in several municipalities in the province of Mediouna. The same is true in the outskirts of the municipality of Daroua, in the province of Berrechid, as well as in the province of Nouaceur.
Reports have noted a decrease in the intensity of control operations in urban planning matters during this holy month, which has favored the construction of housing and warehouses on collective lands. The same sources evoke a certain complicity of the authorities in this proliferation of anarchic constructions, carried out at night. Faced with this situation, Mohammed Mhidia, wali of the Casablanca-Settat region, recently asked the provincial authorities for explanations regarding the connection of these anarchic constructions to water and electricity networks. In the municipality of Bouskoura, in the province of Nouaceur, several two-story or more constructions have been erected without authorization.
Morocco has been waging a fierce battle against these illegal constructions for several months, proceeding with the dismantling of slums and the demolition of dilapidated buildings.
