Casablanca’s Assuna Mosque Renovation Sparks Controversy, Ministry Defends Integrity

The renovation work underway at the Assuna Mosque in Casablanca concerns a minimum of modifications and respects the structural and architectural integrity of the building, according to the Ministry of Habous.
In response to the controversy caused by the demolition work on part of the mosque, the ministry responded to Casamémoire, which had denounced "any attempt to destroy this monument with the characteristic architecture of the 1970s", reports the MAP.
It is not a demolition but a refurbishment, the ministry reassured, adding that the studies carried out for the restoration of this mosque take into account its architectural and heritage value.
According to the technical sheet of the project, the work will include, among other things, the floor covering, the reconstruction of the roof of the prayer hall reserved for women, the rehabilitation of the sound, electricity and sanitation networks, in addition to carpentry and painting work.
The commission responsible for monitoring the construction site has ensured the preservation of the other structures and components of the building, the ministry concluded.
