Canadian tourists shun the United States in favor of Morocco

Trade tensions and rising tariffs are reshaping the vacation map in North America. While Canadian tourists are massively abandoning their American neighbor, Morocco is emerging as one of the preferred destinations for the coming year, benefiting from a quest for exoticism and a better value for money.

The disaffection is quantified and spectacular. Flight Centre Canada reports a drastic 40% drop in bookings to the United States compared to the previous year. Cooled by the economic climate and political friction, travelers are not putting away their suitcases. On the contrary, they choose to travel further and longer, seeking to optimize their budget in countries where their currency offers them better purchasing power.

It is in this context of redistribution of tourist flows that the Kingdom is making its mark. The specialized operator G Adventures, based in Toronto, confirms that while bookings to the USA are collapsing, the appetite for international adventure is growing. The company thus places Morocco in its top 5 flagship destinations for next year, alongside Peru, Costa Rica, Thailand and Japan.

This shift towards Morocco is also explained by new consumption habits. Canadians are now seeking to escape overtourism by favoring the intermediate seasons, such as spring and fall, and an increasing number, especially women, are trying the adventure of solo travel within organized groups. While the beaches of the Caribbean or Asia still attract, the cultural and exotic offer of the Kingdom seduces a North American clientele in search of alternatives to the classic vacation at Uncle Sam’s.
