Broken Dreams and Empty Homes: Moroccan Families Left in Limbo by Stalled Housing Project

For eight years, hundreds of families have been living a nightmare after investing millions of dirhams in the real estate project "Bassatine Al Waha", without becoming homeowners as agreed. "We have paid all the sums due for years and we are still waiting for the delivery of the apartments. This situation has affected our daily life, the children are growing up and we no longer know what to do," laments one of the beneficiaries to the Al3omk website. And to add: "We want the officials to act, there are people in much more difficult conditions than mine, some are still renting and have still not obtained their right."

Another beneficiary testifies: "We have paid all the sums due and we have seen nothing in return. The delay has destroyed our dreams, and we have lived a feeling of powerlessness in the face of a project that was supposed to mark the beginning of a stable life." Faced with this situation, the victims have organized several sit-ins in front of the project headquarters and the official institutions of the city. Placards in hand, they have claimed their legitimate right to housing. Several of them have also gone to court and filed complaints with the competent authorities. Only a few families have been able to receive the keys to their apartments. The majority are still waiting.
