Botched Circumcision in Morocco Leads to Infections, Sparks Investigation Calls

The father of one of the child victims of the collective circumcision operation in Chefchaouen has made revelations about the incident. For their part, human rights associations intend to file complaints with the public prosecutor’s office and call for an investigation to be opened.

On September 20, the collective circumcision operation organized at the Chefchaouen regional hospital by the local association for the support of women and children of Chefchaouen, in coordination with the administration of the aforementioned hospital and the local authorities, turned into a nightmare. Five of the 45 beneficiaries contracted a serious infection and were admitted to the Chefchaouen regional hospital, then transferred to the Tangier university hospital after the deterioration of their health, where they will receive care that will last for several months.

In a statement to Al3omk, the father of a 6-month-old child said that what happened to his son "can only be a medical error" and that "the repetition of the same symptoms in five families at the same time is the greatest proof of this." The president of the Karama Association for the Defense of Human Rights confirms that there was a "medical error" during the circumcision operation, specifying that two other children were also infected, but to a lesser extent, and were transferred to a private clinic in Tetouan and another in Chefchaouen. The condition of two of the five children is very critical, and they are currently in intensive care, says the activist. According to him, they risk permanent mutilation of their genitals, given that their families live in poverty and precariousness.

He says he has contacted the services of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, as well as the Ministry of the Interior, so that an investigation can be opened into this case. He holds the Mohammed V regional hospital in Chefchaouen responsible for this incident, which he describes as "physical killing of children." The human rights defender intends, in coordination with the families of the affected children, to file complaints with the public prosecutor’s office.
